Designing A Custom Plan

What Is A Custom Designed Plan?

A good portion of our work is custom design.  There is an endless selection of plans online but so many people walk into our office or contact us about our custom design service because they can’t find a stock plan that works for them and their lifestyle.  A custom designed plan can mean a few different things but most of the time (for our firm) it is a plan that comes directly from you, the client.  In our process we simply want to put your dreams on paper and turn them into a functional set of working drawings which can be used for construction.

Where To Start?

Most of our clients come in with either a) a sketch of a plan which they completely dreamed up or b) a collection of sketches and/or other plans and want to take components from each one and somehow put them all together.  The beauty of the custom design process is that it doesn’t matter what you start with.  The only thing that matters is what you end up with.  We have no limits on the number of changes we will make to preliminary plans.  We’ll work back and forth with you as much as is required until you are happy with the plans.

Guidance/Suggestions?

Of course!  We’ve been involved in this industry for a long time and our experience comes from involvement.  So, please, ask us questions!  And if, while we review your ideas, thoughts and dreams with you, we run across some design elements that aren’t practical, feasible or just simply don’t flow with the design we’ll let you know.  It’s still up to you to determine what you want included in your new home but we’ll do our best to point out items you may not have considered.

What we won’t do….  We won’t force our vision for your new home on you.  I’ve had the opportunity to work with a number of design firms and architects (as a contractor) and they all have their own way of doing things.  There are some great ones out there who, like us at JH, want to work with you to make your dream come true.  I have also worked with some who take your initial thoughts but ultimately put their vision for your new home on paper.  We truly feel that you are the only one who can determine what your new home should be.  As mentioned, we’ll put our experience to work for you and try to point out things you may not have considered but in the end we want you to see your dreams on paper and we’ll handle the technical details of turning that dream into a working/construction set of drawings.
